Day 3 (Monday March 3, 2008) - WORK!!!
We enthusiastically got ourselves to breakfast and ate heartily before departing for our worksite in Diego Ruiz

Marilyn chips in on the painting with a smile.
–-a 45-minute car ride from the Diocesan Center. This church is similar to the two that we painted last year and so we got right down to business.

The Bishop, Luis, and other local folks joined us, so we got quite a bit accomplished during our first day. Fr. Ivan is the current priest at this church. He is also an old friend, as we worked with him on our New Year’s Trip in 2005-2006. He has only been at this parish for 2 months; so much work was waiting for us.

We began work on the sacristy, but it was not the same as when we locked Terri and Nunzi in one until fumes overcame them. Proud to say, “no injuries” today except when I smacked Dave with a bamboo pole prompting Fr. Ivan to ask if we were married. Speaking of Dave, he is the finest supply master ever, on the planet, ever. He has surpassed Ursula as the person who remembered to bring EVERYTHING to Cuernavaca.

Dr. Bob has become proficient at wielding the machete and yet all fingers and toes are accounted for today! Fr. Ralph has quickly become the fashion barometer for stylish men on a mission. He has Crocs for every occasion.

And then, we have the lovely, innocent Karen; her first trip with us, but certainly not her last. Although she has remained stoic, she is clearly impressed with our operation. Karen claims to be happy, but the truth remains to be seen!!! She is an awesome worker, and draws a mean straight line.

On the local front, an elderly parishioner brought us a lovely lunch of tamarind water and sandwiches (which were sans chilis, because her husband told her we couldn’t take them.) We were so enthused about the tamarind water that she gave us six bags of the tamarind pods to bring home (which we cannot do, legally…). The Bishop thought this was quite funny!

And, so we are awaiting our evening meal and our time for reflection. My days here have brought excellent memories to me and I am anxious for our week to unfold. I am thankful for this committed group who see the potential this ministry. Bulletins as they occur...
