Day 2 (Sunday March 11, 2007)

The beautiful stained glass at the Cathedral downtown.
Captain’s log: Stardate 03112007

We are on the second day of our mission. The 9 pieces of luggage that were apparently jettisoned to New Jersey yesterday morning arrived today. There was much celebration among those who now have clean clothing and such.

This morning after a heart breakfast we piled into cabs and headed for the Anglican Cathedral. My cab had a broken windshield that moved with the speed of the vehicle and the driver had to turn the ignition on and off about 12 times during our short trip.

Traffic in Cuernavaca flows based on ESP. The drivers know when to go based on a premonition they once had about how an on-coming driver whom they have never met will respond in a given situation. And yet the cars mesh like the cogs on a wheel in the finest jeweled watch and traffic almost never stops. I won’t tell you it isn’t scary. It is! But, like a roller coaster ride, there’s no use crying so, I just laugh.

The Cathedral is a beautiful little church downtown. We met some wonderful parishioners. One elderly couple was particularly touching and inspiring. They come to the

Our feet hurt!
English speaking service to practice the English learned in San Mateo California 60 years ago. He stands devoutly at the alter holding the offering plates. At attention, yet thin and frail looking like Don Quixote. His looks are deceiving we learn later. He is a man of great strength and faith. He had a road to Damascus experience when he first saw the stain glass window of the Cathedral from the street. Now he inspires others to see what he saw and to follow.

After church we enjoyed lunch, an exhibition of indigenous dancers and some shopping in the town square area called the Socolo. Some shopped more than others. Some had no inclination to punish their feet and pocketbooks in the near 100-degree heat. For the few, the proud, the sane…Coke Light at a table in the shade.

Oh but the bargains called others like the Sirens to Ulysses. OHHH, look necklaces made of acorns! Next fall certain ladies may be viciously attacked while walking through the park by crazed squirrels. Time will tell.

The fun is in the meeting and greeting with

Cuernavaca's Colorful Native Dancers
citizens of Cuernavaca. Hearing excuse me or I beg your pardon from an American in their native tongue brings a smile and an equally polite response. Mutual respect brings mutual joy. Even just a little bit is enough to make your day.

Tonight, a little worship, a little reflection and a lot of rain. The power has gone out and then come back on so many times I’ve lost count. Tomorrow, WE WORK!

Blessing to all!
WE miss you.
